This story took place in the early 90's. Someone was learning at a non-Chabad yeshiva in Jerusalem and on one occasion had to go into a room there to get something. When he opened the door he was shocked to see a group of students trying to set a copy of Likutei Sichos on fire. Within this yeshiva, Chabad or anything related to it was never a subject of discussion but there was never any hint of hostility towards Lubavitch.
This only compounded this person's shock. He did manage to rebuke the perpetrators who rushed to put out the fire and even mouthed words of apology. This incident took place on a Thursday.
The following Shabbos, the students were eating their meal in the newly-constructed dining hall when someone yelled - "fire in the dorm!" Everyone rushed out to see where the fire was and it was on the window sill in the same room where on Thursday they were trying to burn Likutei Sichos!
Someone ran forward and kicked off objects that were still untouched by the fire which then shortly went out. The fire was apparently caused by a spark from the Shabbos candles left burning in the room.
After the smoke cleared it was learned that the only valuable item that had been destroyed was the pair of TEFILIN that belonged to the initiator of the burning two days prior!
